Picture: CABS textacash, a ZimSwitch Ready mobile banking service

L.S.M Kabweza Avatar

Following our story earlier today on the coming launch of ZimSwitch Mobile later this month, a reader sent us a picture they took of a mobile banking advert by CABS in their Sam Levy’s Village branch in Borrowdale, Harare.

The ad itself doesn’t suggest CABS is ZIPIT ready or that this is a ZimSwitch Mobile service. It does suggest boldly however that CABS is launching a new mobile banking service called textacash which will enable its customers to “send cash home by cellphone”. The banner also has a ‘ZimSwitch Ready’ tag. We think this is ZimSwitch Mobile rolling out. POSB next maybe?

“textacash” This is the most difficult name to read, it took me a couple of seconds to decide if it wast “texta-cash?” or “text-acash” only to find out it was neither, writing it as “text-a-cash” could have helped. Can you textacash me some money? Although skwama still remains the top of my worst names list, I think this one fought hard and earned a well deserved place in the top 20. The name is un-creative and mundane. Its like naming a new line of couches “takeaseat” or a line of mobile phones “makeacall”.

And the tag line? “Send Receive Smile” really?.  And what do they mean send cash home? Is this an international service, or they mean you can send money home from work? if they meant “rural areas” then they must come up with something else. This what you get when you get a committee to make creative decisions. This is very similar to how obviously tech-“ZIM” reaped off tech-“CRUNCH” (There I said it) . This is why in other countries they have branding consultancies.

Now before I am gutted alive here by other commenters please visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_expression  Thank you

I WENT TO CABS TO REGISTER FOR TEXTACASH AND WAS TOLD THEY ARE WORKING WITH TELECEL SIM CARDS ONLY AND IF I WANT I CAN GET ONE FOR FREE INSIDE THE BANKING MALL.CABS SHOULD EXTEND THEIR SERVICE TO ALL MOBILE OPERATORS IF THEY WANT TO SUCCEEED.

Try ZB e-Wallet – no need for bank account, no need for card. And can work on Econet!

Truly disappointing. The fundamental failure of most mobile banking or transfer services is the requirement that people open an account or join a particular bank or service provider. It is most unrealistic to expect people to change phone numbers, or bank accounts, no matter how amazing your new mobile banking service is.

These companies aren’t really interested in launching successful products that will make them money, are they?! Their sole interest is to make waves in the market and in so doing ‘build’ their brands. NetOne, Telecel, Kingdom, Etranzact, CBZ, e-solutions, CABS, Zimswitch (*catches her breath*) have all gone the same way. They are all doomed to fail. The collective ineptitude of their management teams is actually quite staggering.

Ecocash is somewhat different – it’s failure is in its execution rather than its conception. Transaction fees for balance enquiries and transaction listings on a mobile device are laughable! Withdrawal limits that are one tenth the maximum deposit are a rip-off because they ensure that users’ cash is stuck with Econet and that users pay high transaction fees (with more transactions). If Econet do succeed in circumventing banks then they are effectively introducing a new bank, as it were, and must therefore persuade you and I to open accounts with this new bank. Our decision to join will largely be influenced by the size of their merchant network – in all likelihood, there won’t be that many retailers or service providers accepting Ecocash, so we’ll stay away and in a few months, we shall ask “What ever happened to that Ecocash?” The answer to which, will be “Ask Charlie!”
