Econet to spend 1 million Euro on broadband and voice optimisation

Mobile network monitoring and optimization solutions provider, Astellia, announced today that they have signed a EUR 1 million agreement with Econet Wireless Zimbabwe. According to the announcement, Econet will deploy an Astellia solution to monitor network performance for its mobile broadband and voice services and will also have a team of Astellia consultants to provide expert support.

The news release explains that using the new solution, Econet will be able to evaluate the quality of experience perceived from an end-user perspective for data services like internet browsing and video streaming. “It will enable Econet’s optimization team to detect and investigate problems such as slow web browsing due for instance to congestion, inefficient transaction procedures or faulty handsets,” states the announcement.

The Astellia announcement quotes Douglas Mboweni, the Econet chief executive:

Following our network expansion and upgrade phase, our focus now is on making sure the equipment we installed is optimised and able to provide an efficient, reliable service to our subscribers. The Astellia solution will help Econet monitor the performance of our services, and to recommend actions where needed to continually enhance the quality of experience of our customers

Econet is the largest mobile operator in Zimbabwe, both by network coverage and number of subscribers. According to stats released by POTRAZ last month, Econet had 5.4 million subscribers at the end of September. The other two mobile operators, NetOne and Telecel, had 1.3 million subscribers each.

Astellia has done similar work for Airtel Zambia and some other networks in Africa and Europe.

This is good news. Optimisation is the way to go because despite the 3G tag, I remain on EDGE for 90% of the time. Streaming is almost impossible and VOIP is a pain especially with video. Hope it come to fruition soon
