Yesterday Econet announced it had begun charging for its Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). The service was launched in mid-December last year and ran on trial since for two months. Initially, the trial period was meant to last until the end of December.
The mobile operator sent an SMS to subscribers advising them of the development. Part of the SMS read:
Introducing MMS Tariffs: With effect from 16 February 2012 each MMS will cost 15c during peak and 14c during off peak.
It’s not clear what the uptake of the service has been in a market where Facebook and WhatsApp dominate multimedia sharing on feature phones and smartphones respectively. We asked to Econet to give us an idea what the uptake has been, but we’re not likely to get a response at this stage. If we do get one it’ll probably be something vague and extremely positive like “phenomenal”, “massive uptake”, “extraordinary”.

Seen it as well and warrants further investigation. It really brings home the truth: In Zim an IT professional can never hope to fully realize their full potential given the daft national leaders the country has.

why get charged for something you can do for next to nil, viva Whatsapp (fast and money saving).
i think its expensive 15 cents per MM msg, comparing to what you are charged if you send the same message via FB app or whatsApp
