Lagos’ traffic Twitter and Facebook guide, Gidi Traffic, received a nomination for the Shorty Awards which recognize the best short format content creators on the Social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Tumblr. In the “Life Saving Hero” award category, Gidi Traffic is up against 399 other nominees with most of them coming from the United States.

The Gidi Traffic twitter account was, interestingly, set up by an anonymous user in September 2011 to help share traffic reports across the city of Lagos. Its expansion came during the OccupyNigeria protests where it was used to report “trouble” spots across the country and after the unrest ceased they resorted to helping drivers find fuel, avoid jammed routes and any other information useful to drivers.

The Shorty awards are a yearly award ceremony that rewards social media users in different categories which span across almost every category possible (music, fashion, singer, actor, celebrity, humor, designer, photography, youtubestar, coolestperson, blogger. you get the idea). This year’s awards are the fourth and the category which is topped by Gidi Traffic is sponsored by Weather Channel’s Coast Guard Alaska which documents a brave search and rescue team.
