Four executives in African telecoms companies have been listed in the Global Telecoms Business Power 100, a list of the world’s most powerful individuals in telecommunications. The four are; Zimbabwean born Sifiso Dabengwa the CEO of MTN in South Africa, Shameel Joosub the CEO of the Vodacom Group, Chris Wood, the chairman of undersea fibre operator EASSy, and Zimbabwean born lawyer Nic Rudnick, the founder and CEO of Liquid Telecom. Their positions in the list are 35, 43, 79 and 96 respectively.

The list of 100 is prepared by Global Telecoms Business (GTB) a UK based magazine and website renowned in telecommunications reporting and research. GTB has been compiling the list since 2008.

The 2012 list is headed by Dan Mead, CEO of Verizon Wireless, followed by Randall Stephenson CEO of AT&T and Carlos Slim Helu, CEO of America Movil. Current Apple CEO, Tim Cook, is ranked 4th while Google co-founder and CEO Larry Page is at 6. You can view the full list here.

Another Zimbabwean, Norman Moyo, has been listed in a separate 25 executives on the way to power. You will remember that Moyo last year received a Global Telecoms Business (GTB) Forty under Forty award. Then, Moyo was the Zantel Chief Commercial Officer. He’s now CEO at Helios Towers Tanzania, a mobile tower operator.

Last year, Hamadoun Touré, the Malian secretary general of the International Telecommunication Union was named the most powerful individual in the industry. He’s at number 11 this year.
