Pan African telecoms consulting company, Rubiem, opens training institute

L.S.M Kabweza Avatar

rubiemOne of the most successful Zimbabwean founded and owned African telecoms consulting companies, Rubiem, has established a training institute to be based in Harare. We were informed of the development by the CEO of the new company, Chris Tenga, who said they will be officially launching the institute this week.

We had the opportunity to visit the training institute and we spoke at length with Tenga about why they were going into training. The main reason, from our discussion with him, is that the company had seen a skills gap in the markets they are working in providing technical consultancy on the continent.

Tenga told us that the training institute would provide Telecoms training initially but will eventually widen the course range to cover other areas like of a business like leadership and business processes. The courses will be mostly targeted at companies but also open to individuals.

Tenga also said they had seen an opportunity to bridge a gap where, for all new telecoms technologies provided by the likes of Huawei and ZTE (the two account for the majority of technology infrastructure acquisitions by African telecommunications companies) training takes place in China. According to Tenga they target to provide the training locally by working together with the manufacturers of the technology to reduce the time and cost of the training.

Rubiem has provided consultancy services to MNOs and internet providers in most of the countries on the continent. In Zimbabwe however, the company was recently pulled into controversy as they were accused of being awarded consultancy gigs without proper procedure.

Isn’t this company linked with Dennis Magaya? who has been highlighted in several scams here! What does he want to teach the students Corruption????

Its a pity that national decisions are made based on media. If Magaya is corrupt then he should be convicted of wrong doing

    2. Matuzvi Emheni

Magaya did nothing wrong ! Absolutely nothing wrong

Where is the integrity where is the ethics when the one “powerful company” gets jobs because of who they know…what is going to teach the students how to be corrupt

Never mind the owner, think about the service they are providing. They are setting up to train people and impart valuable skills and knowledge. Those who want to go can go those who don’t want then don’t. Thumbs up to Rubiem for doing something that will lead to the growth of the IT sector Zimbabwe can surely do with more players like you.

corruption is corruption . the only reason this college was setup is in anticipation of a huge kickback on training . the owner will recommend to the companies he consults to send their staff to his college …. inonzi conflict of interest

In the end people get trained Rubiem makes money win, win! Every company has its own strategy there is nothing wrong with consulting and training as well, this is just business.

its the quality of training that i question. if they have no integrity to begin with who to say they wont produce half baked professionals for cash

?????? Dude how much have you been paid to say this?? Can I get a loan :)?

          1. Ezra TheITGuy

I have not been paid but i am simply airing my views just as you are. Have you been paid by those who are against Rubiem??

Hahahahaha is that from a Harvard textbook? why is it people cant see the danger in having corrupt elements running institutions that should provide a necessary service. 3 years down the line it would be not so surprising if we hear of scandals taking place there!!! thumbs down the IT sector in Zimbabwe doesn’t need more players like this!!!

Thats why we have law enforcement if corruption is found in this “Learning Institution” then let the law enforcers take action.

        1. TECHNOKRATTI

they wont coz they are corrupt too

        2. observer

I like that fact that you have put learning institution in quotes are you acknowledging something???

          1. Ezra TheITGuy

The Learning Institution is a separate entity from the whole Powertel fiasco

I don’t get the corruption link that you purport to exist with Rubiem or Dr Magaya. Maybe you have some info that we don’t know, may you please kindly share. If you are referring to media allegations then there is no case. As a consultant Dr Magaya was free to charge whatever amount for his services and it was upto the companies that he charged to refuse and find alternative sources. That what he charged these companies for his services is regarded as out of this “country” is another lalaby story for those suitable for such stories. Consultants, as we all know, are free to charge whatever value they place on their services.

        1. TECHNOKRATTI

hear no evil ,see no evil ,speak evil … i rest my case

          1. Maximos Kwenda

That’s not my point. Corruption or evil is on the part of the company receiving the services not the consultant. Im not saying it was ok for PowerTel to pay what it is alleged/reported to have paid no, but im not blaming Rubiem either.
I hope you see where im coming from.

        2. observer

Well said I am sure if there is ever a public debate on curruption YOU WONT BE THERE!!!

        3. Anhu

its not about what he charged..the real issue is some other consultant charged a tenth of what Magaya got but because he is connected he stil got the job ..thats wer our issue is..

Thumbs up to Rubiem. Read Jonzo’s comments in today’s herald! He now says a person is innocent until proven guilty, my foot! Yet he rushed to scandalise Dr Magaya with no proof at all! This is factional fighting in Zanupf targeted at Mujuru faction. Jonzo controls state media and didn’t even offer Magaya the right to respond. SPB even advised Powertel board to engage Magaya in his individual capacity as a contract worker and they did that.

Well done rubiem, results show you are walking the talk not the politicians who are busy abusing people in order to outsmart each other in factional fightings!

    1. Anhu

Hapana apa, you dont need a judge and jury to knw a person earning half a million in this economy jus to consult for a non perfoming state related business is wrong…

Herein is an individual who came up with an idea to help the society but because of what we heard we are not willing to learn from him. Why cannot you just learn to appreciate good things, even when they are done by the “evil” guys. Even Cashbert Dube helped Dube in times of trouble. That was a good deed and this one is a good deed. And who said Magaya is corrupt? Did the courts say he is corrupt? So tomorrow someone says you are corrupt, does that make you corrupt? Let us not preempt judgement. Let the good deeds roll, we have seen so much evil deeds!

    1. TECHNOKRATTI

this is not church this is the real world

    2. observer

      Whose society is he helping?

    3. Anhu

what good things the dude will be tasked to formulate turn around strategies, he wins the bid to imlement them..part of the strategy is skills training, he sends them to his college, he trains them…all this at inflated prices and very low quality of services

  8. macdchip

    Technical training side maybe..

    Business training side Hell NO!
