Gtel Cellular, a local device manufacturer is set to launch a new mobile phone tomorrow night called the Gtel A755. This is likely to be the brand’s new flagship phone, succeeding the A750 Xplora MX1 which was launched in June this year.

One interesting feature about this new phone is that it will be the thinnest device available on the Zimbabwean market, with a thickness of 5.5 mm. This trumps local device manufacturer Astro’s Virtual 2 (6.5 mm) and the Huawei Ascend P6 (6.2 mm).

This impressive specification actually makes this phone the second thinnest device in the world, after Chinese Original Design Manufacturer (ODM) Gionee’s Elife S5.1. Gionee is the same ODM that provides Gtel with hardware which the local manufacturer then brands and distributes in Zimbabwe.

So what can people expect from Gtel’s A755? The super slim device comes with a 5 inch screen with 1080×1920 pixels resolution. It has a 13 MP rear camera, 5 MP front camera. Under the hood it runs on Android 4.4.2, carries a 1.7GHz octa-core processor 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage.

Unlike other Gtel offerings it will not have dual SIM capabilities, using Micro SIM instead. This is likely influenced by the design aesthetics that come with the quest for a super-slim device.

One wonders if this super thin focus is a bigger consideration than multiple SIM ownership in markets like ours where network operator allegiance only extends as far as the next broadband or voice promotion.

Is a super slim phone still that big a deal anyway? It seems that there are a lot of people that want slimmer and lighter devices with every new release. We even have manufacturers like Vivo that are out to beat the 5.1 mm slim phone record, with a 3.8 mm device which has been in the works for a while now. I guess people are not concerned about the risks of their phones bending after all.

You can look out for Techzim’s full review of the device which will take a close look at its performance specs and compare it with other flagship devices.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like the battery took a big hit in this design. But if they found a way to squeeze a decent amount of juice from the battery, it could be a winner

Oh wait, is this the one with the rotating camera? If so it’s gonna need more than a good battery to entice me

Is Gtel Cellular a local device manufacturer or they’re just re-branding the product? I hope it’s an innocuous question…

my question exactly, when u say GTEL is a local manufacturer in Zimbabwe, what does that mean. do they manufacture anything. what i know is that ODM get specifications from distributors like GTEL and manufacture to specification including the branding. so they get a finished product there is no manufacturing here or even assembling. Please correct me if i am wrong.

      Refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_design_manufacturer for clarity

Sorry about that error, The phone is actually running Android 4.4.2.

Jelly Bean sure? these guys arent serious or maybe it is the market that so backward. We are talking of 5.0 Lollipop and someone goes to release a ‘new’ phone that even misses 4.4 KitKat? I give up! Guys, phones are about software, hardware is no longer very key.

nice design, though seems a bit too tall seems to have borrowed the Nexus 5 design, nice looking UI looks and feels comfortable. Unfortunately i do not care much for the capacitive navigation keys and most of all the Mediatek SoC, really not for me.
