Econet says credit sales on devices has only been suspended

Earlier this week, we learnt that local mobile operator, Econet Wireless, had stopped selling devices on credit to individuals customers. It’s a move that some people who commented on the development thought had been inevitable because of the expensive price tags on the devices in Econet’s inventory.

Some of the readers who commented on the development thought had been inevitable because of the expensive price tags on the devices in Econet’s inventory and we assumed that this was the operator’s way of responding to a challenging environment that carries a lot of risk for anyone extending any form of credit.

Econet sent us a response on the credit sales issue, pointing out that the facility has only been suspended and not killed off completely. In its communication, Econet also confirmed that the options that are left for individuals are cash or the lay bye scheme.

You can read the brief statement below.

Econet Wireless has taken a decision to suspend until further notice credit sales on our devices to our individual customers. However, they can still purchase devices either through a lay-bye scheme, or for cash. This suspension does not affect our corporate account holders, their staff and individuals paid through the Salary Service Bureau (SSB) who can still purchase devices on credit.
