Ghana To Chair ITU Council for 2009 – 2010

Ghana has taken over the chairmanship of the ITU Council from Bulgaria. The Council began an annual session yesterday, that runs until 30 October 2009 in Geneva. Council members will discuss the implementation of the ITU’s strategic plan with the objective of responding to the current demands of a dynamic, rapidly changing telecommunications and ICT environment. The council will also review and approve the biennial budget for 2010-2011.

In a press statement published on the ITU website, Mr Haruna Iddrisu, Member of Parliament and Minister of Communications of Ghana said his country is “committed to the ideals and values of ITU” encouraging the members to address the key challenges such as harnessing the power of ICTs to combat climate change.

He also challenged the Council to focus on the issues affecting developing countries, specifically how they can build capacity and attract investment to achieve the connectivity targets set by the World Summit on the Information Society.

The ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun Touré, in his opening remarks at the Council meeting commended the ITU for demonstrating that “information and communication technologies are vital and beneficial in addressing each and every one of the global issues faced today”
