The Verbal POTRAZ Response on Line Registration: We’re Talking to Telecel

POTRAZ

Ok, so three days ago we complained that the telecoms regulator, POTRAZ will not respond to our questions about the validity of Telecel’s mobile line registration methods. Yesterday, we finally got something, a verbal response.

According to Mr. Chiripanhura the POTRAZ finance director the official response was will be coming “maybe before the end of this week, or next week, but have someone working on it”

He was also generous enough to provide a basic indication of what the response would be. He says POTRAZ is in dialog with Telecel to establish what is going on. He also says the instruction to Telecel and other mobile operators was clear and this is to have subscriber identity and proof of residence documents on file.

We’re not sure why the response is taking this long or why we have to wait another week. Maybe the director general has to sign against it.

Like Telecel indicated, it’ll probably be difficult for POTRAZ to enforce the need for those documents on file. Is the deadline even enforceable without causing too much disruption?

We see a deadline extension here. Techzim urges you nonetheless to go and register your mobile line to avoid the inconveniences (and costs) that a disconnection will invite into your life.

UPDATE: We finally received the official response on 2 September, here it is:

Please be advised that the Telecel Zimbabwe registration process via their website and sending sms is still valid. Currently they have engaged  the Registrar Generals’s office for verification of ID numbers sent electronically. Please go ahead and register your line/s with them if you have any.
