Econet to launch Econet Energy

We just received an invitation from Econet to attend the launch of a new venture called Econet Energy. The launch is today in Harare. The Econet Wireless Zimbabwe CEO, Douglas Mboweni, will make a presentation at the launch. Here’s an excerpt of the invite:

Power shortages, which are worsening, remain the most significant threat to our ability to provide quality service. Econet Energy is a brand new venture under which Econet will showcase its short to long term investment vision in renewable energies and in new age eco-friendly technologies.

At the Econet Experience Expo last year, Econet had a ‘solar shop’ stand where some renewable energy gadgets were showcased. The Econet staff at the stand did indicate Econet was going into renewable energy. Well, this is it I guess. You’ll be first to know what went on at the launch.

Here are some photos we took of the gadgets at the ‘solar shop’:

  1.  I take it that the central gadget is for charging cellphones. If that is spread through rural Zimbabwe can you imagine the knock-on impacts on development, agricultural marketing, family connectivity etc. Let us hope it is affordable.
