Staff Writer Avatar

Microsoft has announced that it will be holding Developer Day in Harare this week. At the event, Microsoft will showcase the latest Microsoft technologies for developers with an intention to build an active Microsoft technology developer community in Zimbabwe.

Technologies to be presented at the event include Microsoft SQL 2012, the Windows Phone, Kinect, Visual Studio 2010, and Azure. Microsoft will also use the event to present the BizSpark, a program that helps startups with software development tools. Microsoft held a similar event last dubbed ‘.NET In My City’ which, according to Microsoft, was attended by more than 100 Developers.

The event will take place on 15 March (Thursday this week). If you are in Zimbabwe and want to attend it, please check out the entry in our events calendar here.

There was a time back in the 90s when I would have jumped and headed straight to this event. Not anymore, as a developer I write applications on both Windows and Linux. There’s a plethora of development tools on linux that do the same thing as the expensive M$ development tools. I once found myself writing 2 web applications as the same, one using Viusual Studio 2010 and another Python/Django in Eclipse, what a contrast that was. Python/Django is pure joy, and goes a long way in developer productivity. Not to mention that Python/Django is free as in beer. I now have a policy that a client that insists on MS development tools, they pay for them.

In 2006 they brought a guy called Francois Bonin, a Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (C Sharp). It was a great  environment to learn and discuss  different  things with such chaps. But I think things have changed now and the conference won’t be the same anymore. However, if you are on the zim its worhwhile going whether you use MS Dev tools or not, go out there and learn  what’s trending.

For windows development, naturally Microsoft is the better option. There are limitations on the express editions but you can still create deployment ready apps on them. For learning purposes, its good. Hate it or love it, windows dominates the desktop and because of the way you can link almost all the M$ apps, you can pretty much develop anything within your capabilities…fast!

I would encourage any developer to go. Who knows what may tickle your fancy.
