We just read on the Verge that the internet’s largest and most referred to encyclopedia website, Wikipedia, faced some technical challenges today which resulted in the site’s main page not being available at all. While the site appears to have been fixed now loading it from Zimbabwe is unusually slow right now and when it does eventually load, it shows a plain unformatted page below.

This usually happens when a site is unable to load stylesheet files. Some users are however reporting that they are not having any issues at all opening the site. A tweet by the Wikimedia Foundation posted an hour ago confirms the problem.

The Verge’s report says that earlier, the main page was just loading the error page below.

For young would-be programmers out there, this line, “… when a site is unable to load stylesheet files” is not factually correct. It’s actually the browser that loads style-sheets and applies them to the content its loading and rendering.

I think “factually incorrect” is a bit too strong – the statement itself is OK in colloquial speech (I can picture 1 developer saying this to another without any confusion whatsoever).

What is a ‘site’, really, if not a render by a browser? When slightly reworded, the phrase “… when a site’s stylesheet fails fail to load” would be 100% correct
