Hey, Microsoft does have free email on custom domains

Windows LiveSome two weeks ago, we were whinging like babies about Google killing off its Google Apps free service. We couldn’t imagine a world without credible free email and apps suite for small businesses. We wished Google’s competition would do something about it. Microsoft, as you know, already charges for its online version of the Office Suite, so called Office 365.

But we were looking in the wrong place.

A local ICT Services firm, ICT Warehouse, pointed us to the existence of a service called Windows Live Admin Center by Microsoft.  The service is basically Outlook.com on your own domain, which we know serves what Google Apps, did for most of us out there.  Let’s be honest here, Google’s Drive applications (Spreadsheet, Document, Presentation etc…) are a far cry from the performance and features we get from their desktop competitor.

Playing around with this thing and I guess its not so bad though I’m finding it very slow when using outlook connector something that some die Outlook die-hards could find a bit annoying. On the mobility side, I’m yet to try the android app and see how responsive it is as this is one selling point for most executives. I like that you can still share calendars, documents drive space etc though, forgive me if I’m wrong, its a bit slow. On another technical note it appears IP addresses used by Microsoft for this service are blacklisted under http://www.spamcop.net/bl.shtml and this makes some MTAs reject mail from mail.live.com… All in all a great product just need clarity on the few hiccups
