video-trafficMahindra Comviva, a company providing mobile solution to operators mostly in emerging markets, announced today that they have extended a partnership with a Canadian company called Vantrix, which offers video optimisation and delivery for telecoms operators. The partnership, the announcement says, entails the integration of the two companies’ solutions for the optimisation of mobile broadband video traffic.

You can read about the Vantrix Bandwidth Optimisation here. Essentially the solution helps reduced congestion usually caused by video traffic on the network. That is all those videos shared on Facebook, WhatsApp and now increasingly all the YouTube streaming done on mobile phones.

To show just how much of a big deal this is, Mahindra Comviva threw in a few mobile broadband video traffic stats as provided by Cisco back in February this year:

  • Two-thirds of the world’s mobile data traffic will be video by 2017. Mobile video will increase 16-fold between 2012 and 2017, accounting for over 66 percent of total mobile data traffic by the end of the forecast period.
  • Mobile video traffic in Africa is predicted to grow 27 fold from 2013 to 2017 at a compound annual growth rate of 93 per cent.
  • Video will be 72 per cent of Africa’s mobile data traffic in 2017, compared to 47 per cent at the end of 2012.
