September 10, tomorrow is the big day. The launch of Apple’s new flagship iPhone(s),  the smartphone conjured by the brand that started it all. The smartphone age at least in the form we now have it today was shaped by one company and epitomized by one man.  It’s no surprise then that when Apple announces a new generation anything, fan-boys, investors and the competition all stop and take notes, anticipation is always high. Out of these hugely anticipated launch events we have been gifted with a music revolution, a mobile phone renaissance and lately the tablet uprising courtesy of Mr Jobs and his team of geniuses.

The iPhone 5 was the first iPhone to be released in the post Jobs-era, it was a very troubled launch. Apple’s attempts to replace Google Maps where disastrous, the phone has serious battery issues, demand has been much lower than normal and investors are beginning to ask some pretty tough questions. Could it be that Apple has lost their Jobs-era mojo? With the launch of the iPhone 5S Apple will do everything to reclaim their envied crown and return to their winning ways. It is now tradition that towards the launch of each new version of Apple’s flagship gadgets, expectations and speculation reach fever pitch. This year will be no different, so here are our contribution to the rumour machine that has given many fan-boys many-a-sleepless night – a prediction of six new features we can expect to come with the next iPhone(s) tomorrow.

1.  iOS 7

Perhaps this one is a no brainer, the new iPhone(s) will carry iOS7. The speculation here though is that Instead of just prettier icons, iOS7 is coming with an even more exciting set of new features that we expect to see implemented only  in the new devices, Think “Siri” but much better.

2.  NFC Technology

Near Field Communication allows a set of devices to seamlessly communicate with each other by bringing them into close proximity. This technology is primarily used in contactless mobile payment transactions and data transfer between devices. While this is not new technology in its self it will certainly find new exciting uses in an increasingly cashless and “bankless” society.  After all there is nothing better to kick a piece of technology into the mainstream than an Apple nod of approval.

3.  Fingerprint sensor

Since Apple’s partnership with Australian fingerprint security startup Microlatch and its acquisition of AuthenTec, rumors of NFC technology in the new device have been emboldened, the IPhone 5S promises to move us closer to a mobile payment experience that is more secure and intuitive.

4.  A better HD Camera

While the IPhone has always had a good camera, the new device may feature an even better “Super HD” camera capable of resolutions around 13 Megapixels coupled with a Retina+ display (whatever that is!).

5.  More Colors

In terms of colors, Apple has not done with their recent devices what they did with the iPod, that is until now if latest rumors are to be believed. For the first time ever the iPhone could come in more colours a far cry from the now too common black and white. Fancy a gold iPhone?

6. A Baby Brother

By far the biggest speculation here is the introduction of a new cheaper plastic iPhone. This would be the clearest move that Apple can’t sustain its elitist approach to making and selling devices. While the rumour of a cheaper iPhone “C” has persisted since earlier days, this time we have a good feeling about it.

7.  Stylus Pen

This one is a long shot, but In what would be the most ironic move yet, Apple might go the ‘Samsung way’ by including an onboard stylus with their device. I can’t help but imagine the anticipation and excitement of Samsung’s army of  patent lawyers. Considering that this is an S model, such a major upgrade is not that likely though. Besides Apple is too proud.

What features do you think the iPhone 5S will bring tomorrow?
