Some Telecash branding; apparently “It’s easy with Telecash” mobile money

So far Telecel has been unwilling to say much about their soon to launch Telecash mobile money service but we get bits to piece together every now and again from a few generous souls. Today was such a day and we got to learn a bit about the branding and messaging that will likely carry the service to market.

Presenting on the opportunities in mobile technology services today at Computer Society annual Summer School today, Telecel Marketing Director, Octivius Kahiya, snuck in a slide that had an image of a Telecash agent booth. On the booth is the tag line “It’s easy with Telecash”. We’re guessing this means Telecel plans to fix some pain points users of existing mobile money services have and to make this their “come to us because”.

Or maybe they’re not even thinking in let’s-fix-EcoCash-problems terms. Maybe this is just targeted initially at the 2.5+ million subscribers they have on the network who currently have no access to mobile money services.

Anyway, we thought we’d share. If our market information is accurate (50, 50 hey) Telecel have probably already started their closed pilot by now and are set to launch either at the end of this month, or early December.

    Does anyone know what went wrong with Telecel’s original mobile money product? Skwarma or something like that… Did they just lack enough subscribers to be influential? (I think there were less than a million subscribers on Telecel at the time)
    Anyway, I hope they end the pains of ungainly USSD menus, absurdly high tariffs and network restrictions when they launch. (It would be nice to be able to buy airtime for other networks and transfer wherever we want. Too bad Econet want to be network exclusive.
