Chris Tenga, the Rubiem institute CEO, speaking at the launch of the institute in Harare

Yesterday we attended the launch of Rubiem’s new tech training institute in Harare. Before the launch yesterday we posted an article about the institute covering the general stuff. The opportunity last night was to get more specific stuff about the training they will offer. As we mentioned previously the significance of Rubiem is that this is one of the few African founded telecoms technical consultancy firms on the continent, so them going into training, if they do it well, will probably shift a few things as far as skills are concerned.

At the launch event, CEO Chris Tenga presented the course outline, which you can find on their website. Here is the training they will offer in a snapshot:

  • Technology solutions (telecommunications, ict)
  • Vendor specific training for companies & products like: Cisco, Microsoft and SAP, Huawei, ZTE etc…
  • Customer experience (Sales, sales presentations, after sales)
  • Implementation & delivery (project management, business processes)
  • Business strategy (entrepreneurship, business planning, business performance)
  • Human capital (HR delivery chain, talent management, mentoring and coaching)

Tenga also explained at the event that their role as an institute is to complement what regular colleges (universities & polytechnics) are providing as they bring in a practical approach from their experience running a telecoms consulting company. “We are not academics and we will never pretend to be. What we bring is field experience.” he said.

The training institute itself is based in Newlands Harare. Tenga told the audience yesterday that they have already opened the doors and have classes that are going to start running right away. He however said in future they are looking to deliberately depart from the traditional brick and mortar training models so that people that are not physically at a place, can participate.

Tenga disclosed that plans onward are to launch the institute in other countries in the region, starting with Namibia in the coming months. Immediately however, trainers will be sourced regionally he said.

Other services provided by the institute include industry events (symposiums) and ICT research services in order to inform Policy formulation at government and industry level.
