PIVOT East 2014: Startups in mobile finance category highlights

East Africa’s largest startup competition, PIVOT East has come to life and East African startups have started a battle of ideas and an event being held in Nairobi Kenya. The first category was on Startups in (mobile) Finance which saw five startups, three from Kenya and 2 from Uganda pitching ideas on mobile finance, payments etc.

PIVOT East is in it’s fourth year running and it is hosted by Kenya’s mLabs.

Beyonic (Uganda)

Beyonic is a Ugandan mobile money startup and their solution allows businesses to eliminate cash by making payments to employees and other businesses via Mobile Money.

Chura (Kenya)

Chura is a Kenyan Startup that had developed a platform that allows users to make cross network airtime transfers. Chura means frog and the name fits the name of the platform that allows users to jump from one network to the other.

ChamaSoft (Kenya)

ChamaSoft is a Kenyan startup that has developed a platform to better manage chamas. Chamas are Kenyan versions of “maround” in Zimbabwe.

Ensibuuko (Uganda)

Ensibuuko is Ugandan mobile app that gives Ugandan farmers faster and easy access to loans via mobile. The company has already raised $20,000 in seed funding.

Valuraha (Kenya)

The final pitch in the Finance category came from Valuraha which is basically a financial intelligence app. It offers users with information on African stock pretty much the way ZimStocks does for the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange.
