Today Telecel announced the introduction of a Tel One bill payment facility through Telecash. This new service is meant to enhance the appeal of the mobile money service, which since its introduction earlier this year has been focused on adding merchant services and functionality that can compete with the market runaway leader, Ecocash.

The Tel One option joins the list of other payment services that Telecash users have been able to access courtesy of Telecash’s user friendly bill payment option. It would seem that Telecel is focusing on improving the relevance of Telecash by building on the service’s strengths like simplicity of transaction.

Bill payment options for other mobile money services like EcoCash for example require the entry of a biller’s code even for popular services like DStv and now Tel One. This is something that one would expect Ecocash to have simplified by now seeing that they started offering bill payment options for various service providers a lot earlier.

With its noble intention of saving Tel One/Telecel subscribers the hassle of queuing for the sole purpose of making a payment this is of course a positive development. However the biggest bill payment service that mobile money users from Telecash and EcoCash are likely to celebrate will be the ZESA prepaid electricity option.

Any news on the pre-paid ZESA payments through Ecocash or Telecash? Actually what is stopping them ?
