Byo Workshop ZOL Startup ChallengeTwo days ago the Techzim and ZOL were at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) for a tech entrepreneurship skills workshop and the first ever ZOL Startup Challenge Bulawayo Meetup.

The City of Kings’ techie community came out in full force for the event with a lot of startups expressing their interest in being part of this year’s challenge. The first half of the day was skills workshop which culminated in group based problem solving activities.

In addition to the skills workshop attendees got to listen to a testimony from Godwin Thierry Chiparaushe, a past participant and winner of the startup challenge. Godwin gave insight on his own startup, Soccer 24, which he entered into the 2012 ZOL Startup Challenge and has been running successfully since.

One takeaway from the event was the networking opportunity that techies and aspiring entrepreneurs got a chance to engage in. With several ideas being shared and some partnerships forming, a lot of the people at the event were pleased by the chance to engage with other individuals with a techpreneurial spirit.

By most attendees’ accounts the event provided useful insight into the dynamics of internet based entrepreneurship, ,business modelling and elevator pitching; skills that are being promoted through this year’s ZOL Startup Challenge revised format.

The 2014 edition of the annual ZOL Startup Challenge was launched on the 21st of August with a Harare meetup that introduced a new format meant to enhance the scope of the whole event and equip participating startups with skills for business through the internet.

Following Bulawayo’s Skills Workshop, there will be a similar workshop in Harare today at Area 46 in Mt Pleasant. The event is open to anyone keen on picking up knowledge valuable to tech entrepreneurship.
