Zimbabwean recognized at inaugural African YouTube awards

Global Islamic Scholar, Dr. Mufti Ismail Menk, has won the top subscribed YouTube content creator in Zimbabwe award at the inaugural Sub-Saharan African YouTube Awards.

The African award ceremony is the first of its kind with YouTube finally taking notice of the diverse content creation happening across our continent and broadcast on its platform. The original YouTube awards were started back in 2007.

Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Dr. Mufti Ismail Menk has been named one of the top 500 most influential Muslims in the world since 2010 and carries Zimbabwe’s top followed/liked/subscribed social media accounts.

Dr. Menk has over 2 million likes on his Facebook Page, +950k followers on Twitter, +550k followers on Instagram and most importantly +160k subscribers on his YouTube channel making him the most prominent Zimbabwean in social media.

After watching a few of his videos on YouTube it is quite clear Dr. Menk is a true Zimbabwean at heart as he references his life and history in Zimbabwe in detail with quite some interesting stories.

It’s pleasing to see African content creators do so well on an International platform like YouTube. For obvious reasons (high costs of the internet, lack of infrastructure, low ICT penetration rates etc)  we can’t compete with developed countries content creators just yet so it was a smart move to first allow us to compete as a continent first to give us room to grow and develop our own identities on YouTube.
