Just 7 months after launch, WhatsApp says its users are making a total of 55 million video calls a day and spending a total of 340 million minutes on those calls.

The app is especially popular in India where users make 50 million minutes of video calls daily via the app, the highest compared to users in any other country in the world.

This ofcourse explains why WhatsApp prioritises the country when introducing features, like the upcoming payments feature.

This announcement was made by WhatsApp as is launched a new version of the app that makes the video calling feature prominent. The video calling option will now appear next to the voice calling menu within conversations on Android.

Here the location of the video calling option now:

These new statistic show that WhatsApp is now easily one of the biggest mobile ‘network’ operators in the world. Most forward looking mobile operators have however already accepted the inevitability of people using apps for calls instead of the traditional voice calls.

Most, especially in Africa countries like Zimbabwe, now offer WhatsApp bundles to encourage the use of WhatsApp. They’d rather have their subscribers using their network to make WhatsApp calls than use a competitor’s.
