Now you don’t have to be left out on events happening in your area…

I remember some time last year, my friends and I attended a great event. Apparently, the event took place often, but we only got to know of it then and were consequently attending it for the first time.

We were quite surprised on how we had not known such an event existed and couldn’t help but wonder how many more similarly good (or better) events we had missed. I remember then discussing in passing on why we couldn’t just have a mobile App that notifies people of everything happening around them upon request and how handy that would be.

Well, seems like someone else thought of it too, but unlike us, he went ahead and developed it. Kholwani Mabhena from Bulawayo thought of how crucial it is for people to be aware of public events and also figured how difficult and tedious it can be for people to “follow” a certain individual, business or group before getting to know of their upcoming events.

He also figured why not have a single go-to platform which will be easily accessed by people, hence the MyEvents App.

The application is quite simple to use, it gives you the option of either being the ‘broadcaster’ or a consumer. The former basically is an option used by event organisers to convey information about their event so that the latter (consumers) can access it.

The app is only available for android devices and to get it, click on this link or alternately, you can download it from the MyEvents website. I think these links would be much more ideal to use since I personally had trouble finding the app on Play Store when I looked for it the first time. The reason being, there is quite a number of apps with a similar name in the Store.

So far, both services (broadcasting and consuming) are for free, but I understand that won’t be the case after the application gains some satisfactory attraction. Broadcasting will be pegged at a fee determined by the target reach however, consuming will remain free.

Broadcasters can choose their target area by selecting “local”, “city” or “national”. This will then determine what the consumers can see after selecting their location of interest. However, if the broadcasters select a national coverage, it means that regardless of which location the consumer picks, they still get notified of the event.

Also, consumers get to select their areas of interest from the array provided which include tech, business, entertainment etc. This will help ease the search process, as it filters out things that will not be of benefit to the consumer.

Since the app was only launched on the 21st of June this year, Kholwani is still trying to solve the chicken and egg problem for his product. He however has resolved to first getting broadcasters on board and since it’s free, they have little to lose by using his platform to advertise their events.

Hopefully that works out for the startup so that we start downloading the app otherwise there’s no way people would compromise their phone storage space for a desert application. Otherwise once that is sorted, people like my friends and I would be sure to use it!
