The Windows Phone community, though small, is a very passionate group of people. All this talk about Windows Phone being dead because Microsoft announced there will be no features added to the OS won’t sit well with them. That a Microsoft VP mentioned that hardware is not the focus does not matter, they are holding out for the Surface Phone.
While we wait for the Surface Phone to uh, surface, we have to contend with the fact that Windows 10 Mobile is, if not dead, critically ill. Microsoft confirmed as much. They however assured fans that they would continue to support the OS with security updates and bug fixes for now, just not new features.
The number of Windows 10 Mobile running phones has shrunk further though.
Microsoft published the list of devices that will continue to receive updates on Windows 10 Mobile and the list looks really small. We are down to only 13 phones still being supported and of those 13, only 4 are Microsoft Lumia phones.
Here is the full list:
- Lumia 550
- Lumia 650
- Lumia 950
- Lumia 950 XL
- HP Elite X3
- Wileyfox Pro
- Alcatel IDOL 4S
- Alcatel IDOL 4S Pro
- Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL
- Softbank 503LV
- VAIO Phone Biz
- MouseComputer MADOSMA Q601
- Trinity NuAns Neo
As you will notice, the Lumia 640 and 640 XL are nowhere to be seen. Microsoft is yet to comment on why those two phones are not on the list but whatever the reason, they are going to disappoint a number of people. The remaining Windows fans are likely not to feel to confident about the future of the platform if more news like these keep coming.
If all this makes you want to jump ship to Android or iOS, worry not, Microsoft has over the years been shifting focus to cloud-based services and you could be like Bill Gates who has an Android phone with ‘lots of Microsoft software on it.’ You will feel right at home.
