Has Econet Refunded The 60 000 Subscribers Whose Airtime Was ‘Disappearing?’

Farai Mudzingwa Avatar

On Monday, we wrote an article on the challenges Econet subscribers were facing over the weekend. About 60 000 subscribers were left in the dark as their credit was being used for data services even if they had not activated ‘out of bundle’ browsing.

We reached out to Econet and they informed us that they had been having trouble with some of their systems internally but pledged to refund the affected subscribers. Here is the response they gave us on Monday:

Econet would like to apologize to customers affected by data issues arising from a routine system upgrade implemented over the weekend. The issue is being addressed and the affected customers will be refunded in the course of this week. Econet takes this opportunity to thank all its customers for choosing their products and services.”

Today is Friday, and I am still waiting for the promised refund. As I write this, other Techzim staffers who were affected have not yet received their compensation as well. Techzim community groups also had people asking if and when they would.

We reached out to Econet to see if they had refunded subscribers but they have not yet responded. Now we ask the readers who went through the same experience if you got your refunds? If you did please do tell (in the comments below).

Sometime during the week, some Econet subscribers got a message notifying them that they had been awarded some credit for use at Econet’s WiFi Zones. The only problem was that the subscribers I know had been ‘awarded’ 0Mb. You can check the message out below and make sense of it on your own.

Anyway, we are not sure if this was Econet attempting to compensate users before running into some problems again or if they were testing out something else entirely.

Very annoying. Econet takes customers for granted. Sometimes being too big and cornering an industry is not healthy. We can see this with econet. Healthy competition good otherwise this shoddy treatment will not end. I am in Suri Suri Chegutu and despite having 3G or 4G on and off you hardly can download anything and your data disappears. Bought 1gig daily bundle and it expired without me being able to download load anything.

Yeah this is nice and another one issue that should be addressed politically and socially is the amount of data that we are paying for is too much and the issue should be addressed. In other countries data sometimes is given for free as token of appreciation. For example l have been in Namibia for more than 6 months and l still remember that on 1 January 2014 data was free for everyone, people will just browse the Internet, do downloads, do researches and anything that you want for free. So we also want econet to do that for us. I love Internet l love computers and l love data science

They are not swift with their refunds. I remember going to lodge a complaint at econet when i had topped up 3 times from my bank (the $1 airtime=$3) some 3 years ago and they said they would refund….I waited days, weeks and months. I think around 4 or 5 months later after i had given up on it, that is when they eventually refunded. They may take that long.

Econet just takes customers for granted. They have a fake ” good reputation ” in terms of business. Some people talk highly about Econet but surely I think they are the worst in this country!

I sent my $7 to the wrong mechant number last year and was told it took 4 working days to correct the mistake up to now the money has not been returned to my account despite visiting econet twice

I have bought $3 worth of data today and it lasted not more than 15mins. Econet needs to do something soon.

All along I thought it’s only me,made a follow up when i never used my airtime,I don’t borrow n have never done that, got a call from these numbers after chasing my airtime 0772222998
    0772222265
Explained thoroughly but never got a satisfactory answer and I am still bitter and want my airtime back,if there is something wrong with their system they have to simply reimburse and not to give me details of something I never attempted successfully, recharged airtime and tried by data using that airtime n failed then they claim I got the data n yet phone indicated insufficient funds or whatever..

i was refunded 10 mbs of wifi data and i need abt 3 usd transport money to get to the nearest wifi zone and another $3 to return

still no refund for me. mine was not even data it $3 for voice so the idea of data refund is rediculous worse still WiFi data, as for I just have to travel 100km to get a WiFi zone. I hope the refund my $3 back n in time. it v more considering the inconvenience. they simply ignore our Twitter complains. I doubt if 60k is a correct figure, t must b more than that.
