Kwese vs DStv will continue to square up as Kwese TV is being introduced to the Liberian Pay-TV market. Before this development, Kwese’s Free-to-air channel Kwese Free Sports was already available in Liberia but now Liberians will be able to access the ‘full bar and catering’ as a popular local musician would say.

The move is a result of a partnership with telecommunications company Orange and the Chief Executive of Orange Liberia, Mamadou Coulibaly, said:

This is the first time customers will enjoy a multi-screen experience in Liberia; seamlessly accessing their favourite programs at home on their TV or on the go with their mobile phone. We believe there are more innovative content services to enjoy and we will carry on to work hard with Econet Media to deliver them to Liberians

Timing

This move comes at the right time as Kwese’s low-pricing will probably be a good option for . In Liberia, Kwese will also be competing with DStv and their aggressive pricing may help them steal away some customers who are interested in watching the World Cup but are not willing to fork out the premiums necessary to subscribe.

Making moves….

Kwese has been making aggressive moves to gain ground as this move into Liberia comes shortly after Kwese announced that Video On Demand Kwese iflix would now be available locally. I’m yet to try the service but one member of our team who has dipped their toes has enjoyed their experience thus far.

Kwese has probably made this move with a deliberate intention to get as much revenue as possible and having subscribers sign-up in anticipation to the World Cup could be a stroke of genius as the users could end up liking the service and sticking with it even though initial sign-up is motivated by the soon-to-begin World Cup.

Will Liberians commit?

It’s hard to comment definitively on the Liberian market without actually knowing what the people there are interested in but maybe Kwese will have a better time in Liberia than they’ve had thus far in Zim. Locally, it seems most people have been complaining about a lack of sports content, particularly the popular EPL(English Premier League).

To address this Kwese secured the rights for the French Ligue 1 and will begin broadcasting match from the French league. Maybe the opportunity to see popular players such as Neymar and Mbappe will bring consumers to the Kwese TV in both Liberia and all other markets.
