Zimbabwe Banned From Accessing New York Stock Exchange Website

The largest equities-based exchange in the world, The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has banned users in Zimbabwean from accessing its website. NYSE has blocked the country’s IP address hence its preventing people located in Zimbabwe from accessing NYSE’s website. Check out what;

IP address blocking can be used to restrict access to or from a particular geographic area. For example, the syndication of content to a specific region. To achieve this, IP addresses are mapped to the countries they have been assigned to.

This has been used for example to target Nigerian IP addresses due to the perception that all business originating from the country is fraudulent, thus making it extremely difficult for legitimate businesses based in the country to interact with their counterparts in the rest of the world.

In the case of Zimbabwe, we don’t really know the reason why we are banned.

We have tried to reach out to NYSE but we are still waiting for their response.

How can Zimbabweans access the website?

Users can circumvent the ban by using virtual private networks (VPN), which make it seem as though they are accessing the internet from another country.

    Opera has a built in VPN that will change your IP allowing you to browse the web privately 🙂

    And so they have…… the Govnt really need to seriously change their attitude. It is because of them we are always in this predicament.

      Let’s put blame where it’s due. The NYSE is a privately owned stock exchange. They made the decision to restrict an entire nation from accessing information they provide online.

    I’m sure this isn’t a big issue for most people. If you have money invested in the New York stock exchange, I’m sure the internet isn’t your sole source of information.

      The point of a news site is to share factual information. Whether each and every article applies explicitly to the reader or not isn’t wholly relevant. What’s important is getting the information out there to the mass public. Sure in this instance not many people will have investments in NYSE and have found out about the blockage via Techzim, BUT, Techzim is chasing NYSE for answers and finding out the story of the block. That’s newsworthy because in the age of free speech and unlimited access to information nobody should have these restrictions. Furthermore, and most importantly in my opinion, this is only one instance of a website blockage we know about; how many others are there out there, and why? Maybe this investigation will uncover more information!

    A number of websites in USA are not accessible from Zimbabwe. Example https://www.target.com/ (response: {“error”:”Access Denied to requested resource”,”code”:”FORBIDDEN”}) and https://www.jcpenney.com/ (response: We Are Currently Unable to Provide a Shopping Experience for This Country, Please try again later). For those who do shopping online. There are also EU based sites with same restrictions. When I contacted Telcoms once to access an EU site, they said they were fixing the problem – no success.
