Are DStv Subscriptions Now Paid In US Dollars Or Zim Dollars? Here’s What Multichoice Said

DSTV bond notes payments

I know y’all been waiting for this since the Zimbabwean Dollar became the sole legal tender late last month. We have received numerous emails asking if DStv subscribers can now start to pay for subscriptions using the Zim Dollars (RTGS and Bond notes and coins) since businesses are no longer required to request payments in US dollars.

We got in touch with Multichoice and here’s what’s they had to say about your burning question:

The new Statutory Instrument SI 142 does not affect payments to Multichoice Africa. DStv payments are foreign payments for a service which is being offered by a non-resident, and as such, MultiChoice Africa is exempt from this specification.

So, DStv still requires you to pay for subscriptions in US Dollars and by doing so it’s not breaking any law. Sorry folks for the disappointment.

P.S Here at Techzim we made it easy for you to make your DStv payment using Zim Dollars. Just click this link. The best experience is through the Techzim Market app

How are other nations with Dstv equipment paying for the services?

No that’s not what we have been waiting for 🙂 lol, what we need from DSTV right now is to give us a ‘no-ZESA’ adjusted price. I know for a fact that myself and a couple of some friends are not going to subscribe this month going forward because it does not make any sense to subscribe to watch when ZESA is back at 2200hrs to 0500hrs, who does watch TV around that time. Can you find from DSTV if they intend to give us a pay per view (PPV) option?

There is more to it than meets the eye, how come they are subject to the Zimbabwe broadcasting authority? Other countries are paying in their local currency. Is multi choice Zimbabwe not a Zim company?

      S.A. company

But something doesnt add up here.., well look in South Africa, their MULTICHOICE BILLS are settled in that nation’s local currency which is the Rand, in Botswana -Pula. Then my question is , how come Multichoice Africa decided to demand its payments here in Zimbabwe in USDs not the local currency.

In South Africa the bills are not even equated as per international USD rates why??? We must really look into this

True, but have you realized that all those countries which accept local currency as payment, their currencies are stable unlike the bond, and besides you can awaes subscribe your Zim account in SA paying ZAR, thing is the Zim dollar is not yet stable so yea we are going to be doomed until it’s stable just like the other countries

The Problem with Zim dollar is that it’s bonded,Other currencies work in other countries

Its oky if yu want us to pay with the USD but we will only pay wen we get the USD from America coz we don’t print foreign currency here in Zimbabwe and the rate is too much to purchase that USD from money launders, or else we will put that thing in display and watch our ZBC TV, simple it wil wrk and u wil not wrk simple

Dstv invested in zim fully aware that they will be paid in Local currency, imagine if every foreign company requested for their services in USD. Zim is open for bissuness so literally FDI’s will redolarise the economy…If Dstv zim doesnt want local currency and its not working for them, let them Ship out.. Simple..

Other countries can have payments in their currencies, because their economies function normally, and they are able to get foreign currency from their banks and make external payments.

Kwese allowed subs to pay in bond/Ecocash, and what happened to them?

magetsi hakuna! Better to get streaming services or VOD

Reality is they are not here to donate but making money. In our case we don’t have money but message’s confirming money and internationally unrecognized value loosing notes. Its unfortunate it is very true that we don’t have a currency to trade with other nations except adopting a neutral currency when doing business with other foreign businesses. But if the service was a security threat like health ,education or food even the GVT and NGO’S would join in the masses. Its tough to get those USD ,its now a matter of selecting needs and wants. But hopefully this won’t spread to other strategic areas too.

DSTV should introduce a favourable way of payment that is similar to that of juicing cellphones because with the way Zesa is doing its business we will be just paying for nothing coz you cannot wake up at 2300 hrs just to watch dstv so that u make up for your money. They should just let it be a pre-paid issue so that when their is no electricity and their service is not being provided then my money’s worth is not being wasted. They are benefiting a lot from payments that expire as per set dates whilst service is not being provided due to these Zesa blackouts

Government has shares in Multichoice Zimbabwe, that is the only reason that I see for them being allowed these shenanigans. By their lame “excuse” even ISPs have payments to make to non-resident entities. If they are strictly a non-resident operation, adding NO VALUE WHATSOEVER to the Zimbabwean economy, it is nonsensical to grant them special protections. They should be paid in RTG$ and buy forex on the market like every other company is having to do.

    1. JayDeeBee

I suppose paying taxes and employing the scores of people that they do, in Harare, Bulawayo, Mutare and Chitungwiza is adding “no value whatsoever to the Zimbabwean economy.”
Seriously, you should think before saying such ignorant things!

Once our dollar becomes convertible we will be able to subscribe using our local currency.
