Facebook Transfer Tool Goes Global

Facebook has announced a global roll out of their Transfer Tool. This feature had been launched in North America in April, with staggered releases elsewhere. You can now, if you wish, move your media from Facebook to Google Photos.

At Facebook, we believe that if you share data with one service, you should be able to move it to another. That’s the principle of data portability, which gives people control and choice while also encouraging innovation. Today, we’re releasing a tool that will enable Facebook users to transfer their Facebook photos and videos directly to other services, starting with Google Photos.

Where it all started.

Facebook held discussions with its stakeholders across the world in September last year and published a white paper titled Charting The Way Forward, Data Portability and Privacy.

There’s growing agreement among policymakers around the
world that data portability—the principle that you should be
able to take the data you share with one service and move it to
another—can help promote competition online and encourage
the emergence of new services. Competition and data protection
experts agree that, although there are complicated issues
involved, portability helps people control their data and can make
it easier for them to choose among online service providers.

How to use it.

  1. Go to your “Your Facebook Information” in Facebook Settings
  2. Select “Transfer a Copy of Your Photos or Videos”
  3. Enter your Facebook password
  4. Choose Destination. (Select Google Photos in the Dropdown)
  5. Select Confirm Transfer

Another one of those ideas that you’d wonder why they didn’t introduce earlier. Linking your Google Photos to your computer or device keeps the media there for you when you are offline. It is our data after all and now we have the option to copy it elsewhere.
