WhatsApp data bundles are a practice I don’t agree with, however, no matter what I think they are a part of our lives. One thing I have noticed though is that whenever I am in a group with ordinary non-tech Zimbabweans in South Africa, the South African based people there seem to always whine about […]
A few days ago Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (Econet) issued a notice to its debenture holders offering to redeem debentures it issued on 17 January 2017 early. This means instead of waiting for them to mature about three years from now, the holders of the debentures can have them redeemed now. The debentures have a market […]

fingers crossed these base stations are operational in the not too distant future.
NetOne hasn’t been alone when it comes to poor data services as Econet subscribers have also complained about internet connectivity dropping.
Despite showing the most growth in active subscribers in Q3 2020, NetOne is losing ground to its competitors when it comes to mobile data and voice traffic market share in the period under review.

Airtime shouldn’t only be for calling and buying bundles. EcoCash and Econet Zimbabwe need to implement airtime conversion here as they did in Lesotho.
Buying a phone or most electrical gadgets in Zimbabwe has been a nightmare for citizens because of duties. The excessive customs duties on these devices have made it a struggle for Zimbos to buy smartphones and Econet recently claimed that there is a 52% smartphone penetration rate in their latest annual results. This they noted […]
Econet Wireless Zimbabwe’s financial results for the year ending February 2020 are out. The country’s largest mobile network operator (MNO) ended the 2010s on a financially challenging note. For the first time in the decade, Econet posted a loss of ZW$1 352 966 000. Yes, over a $1 billion in losses – quite the number. […]
Econet recently published its full-year results and in the report was a small detail I and (I believe) many other customers will appreciate greatly. The idea of fewer minutes NOT waiting in an Econet shop sounds like a dream and that’s what the company is promising. In fact, for those looking to replace their SIM […]
2019 was a dark year for Zimbabwe and I mean that in the most literal sense. We had a power crises for over half the year and its impact on small and big business alike was pretty brutal. For many small businesses the power crisis of last year resulted in closure and larger businesses had […]
Earlier this week we noted that there was some confusion surrounding the eLearning bundle. A school authority we spoke to mentioned that an Econet employee who was handling their purchase of the bundles informed them that the eLearning bundle was being suspended. We reached out to Econet PR to understand if this was official and […]
We have it on good authority that Econet might stop offering eLearning bundles from the beginning of September. The cheaper bundles were extremely useful to schools who were able to buy cheaper data for students to conduct lessons online during the pandemic. What’s the official position? Well, we reached out to Econet representatives to get […]
We’ve written about the black market for eLearning bundles a couple of times now. In fact, we’ve done so on four different occasions now. Most recently we noted that fraudsters were selling eLearning bundles and then not giving buyers the data. Whilst buying eLearning bundles from this black market has always come with an inherent […]

Econet has made it simpler for people looking to buy data to attend live streams of their church services – by adding the bundles to their USSD menu. What’s new? When the bundles were introduced a few months ago the only way to buy them was pretty cumbersome. A religious institution had to call/email an […]
Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zimbabwe together with Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) filed an urgent application with the High Court forbidding the ZRP and CID from searching Econet’s premises and obtaining a database containing all subscriber details. MISA & ZimRights argue that the warrant of search and seizure threatens citizens’ various fundamental rights, […]
Econet CEO- Mutsvangwa’s failure to get telecoms licence 2 decades ago reason for Econet’s targeting
Yesterday we broke down some of the information that Econet presented before the High Court as part of its urgent chamber application to temporarily suspend the Magistrate’s decision to grant a Search and Seizure Warrant to ZRP. Douglas Mboweni’s statement in that application was a scathing criticism of CIDs Head of Asset Forfeiture Unit Mkhululi […]
On Friday, the Magistrate’s court issued a search and seizure warrant giving the ZRP permission to raid Econet Wireless offices. The Criminal Investigation Department sought the warrant on the basis that they suspect Econet Wireless to be “involved in money laundering”. In fact, the allegations are that Econet Wireless and subsidiaries created and issued “non-attributable […]
Former Higher Education (before that Information Minister), Jonathan Moyo has just posted a copy of a search and seizure warrant purportedly issued by a Magistrate’s Court to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) against Econet Wireless. The former minster said the police are the Econet and Cassava offices right now (around 9PM on Friday 17 July […]
I wasn’t planning on writing this but two things changed my mind. First, as I was working on another article, I came across this quote; Unfortunately, telecoms brands continue to struggle to earn the respect of consumers, with average reputation scores for providers brands right at the bottom of our sector league table. Consumers love […]
6 days ago, we bought the new Smart Kambudzi phone from an Econet store in Avondale. At the time the phone was ZW$3000, and in addition to getting the phone (duh) Econet were also promising that each buyer would get 6 Gb free data. Well, 6 days later and multiple back and forths with Econet […]
