Twitter’s Spaces, a competitor to the once very exclusive Clubhouse has really taken off worldwide. The platform is very popular as a way of having conversations with a wide audience (depending on your following) about a range of topics. Zimbabweans have jumped on the Twitter Spaces with notable figures like Hopewell Chin’ono regularly hosting conversations. […]
Twitter recently announced a new feature to their platform called Tip Jar where select twitter users can earn money from their Tweets. A button will appear on the user’s profile and if someone clicks on it, it will send them to their payment wallet to complete the transaction.
What will it take for this feature to be made open to Zimbabweans as well and how long will it take to get here?
A possible future.
A Twitter phishing attack in action.
What to do when an elected official breaks Twitter’s terms of service… well the company is looking for your input to help decide this.

What the cause of the suspension is unknown, however, Twitter usually suspends user accounts that have violated the following in its terms of service: Safety rule – these include violence, terrorism, abuse, sensitive media, and illegal goods or services, and harmful content Privacy – private information and […]
ZANU-PF has announced they will be creating provincial social media teams. The duty of these teams according to a Chronicle report will be to “defend the party and government programs on social media.” This is a pretty interesting development and when you consider the party’s image online, it’s surprising ZANU-PF didn’t do this sooner. According […]
Yet another Zimbabwean government-affiliated Twitter account has been placed under temporary restrictions. This time it’s the Ministry of Health’s Twitter account. Earlier this week, the account of Information Secretary Nick Mangwana was placed under temporary restrictions. The assumption of that ban was that it may have had something to do with Twitter’s fake followers. The […]
Yesterday, prominent journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume who had been arrested on the 20th of July were finally granted bail. Apart from the $10 000 & $ 50 000 bail, instructions to report to the police 2-3 a week respectively, and surrendering their passports, the two were also banned from using social media. Yuhp, […]
Nick Mangwana’s Twitter account has been placed under temporary restrictions because of some “unusual activity”. This is the second time that a government-affiliated account has prompted action from Twitter. A couple of weeks ago the account for the Ministry of Information was suspended by Twitter. The Ministry’s account appeared to have been suspended because a […]
There’s been a flurry of online campaigns lately to get certain organisations to act in a way that appeases social media. The one that got my particular attention as an entrepreneur is the one against Impala Car Rentals. Word got out that Impala Car Rentals (ICR) rented our a car to individuals who proceeded to […]
Back in April, the Ministry of Information’s Twitter account was suspended. Whilst it never became clear why the account was taken down – it’s happened again. Yes, the government’s official mouthpiece has been suspended twice in four months now. What did they do this time? Similar to what we think happened last time, the account […]
Earlier this year, Twitter started testing out a feature that allowed users to specify who could reply to their Tweets. After what seems like an eternity the feature is now rolling out to every Twitter user. The feature was supposed to be introduced in Q1 of 2020 but it didn’t meet that deadline. It allows […]
On the 31st of July Zimbabweans were supposed to take to the streets and protest against bad governance and corruption… The 31st came and went but the streets were empty. Zimbabweans could not protest because the government banned the protests. Why? Well, different government officials said different things. Home affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe said the […]
Yesterday, prominent Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono was arrested by law enforcement agents at his house. Shortly before his arrest the journalist tweeted that the law enforcement agents had made their way to his residence and were harassing his workers. Shortly after his arrest, his account which wasn’t verified was taken down Twitter users going to the […]
Last night Twitter verified accounts were hacked, these accounts included those of prominent international figures and companies Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Joe Biden, Uber and more. The hack left the following post (which had a link): Twitter moved to remove the tweets and suspended some functionality to verified accounts. The initial wave of […]
Twitter seems to be working on some sort of subscription service model. A job listing on Twitter Careers is looking for a senior software engineer for a new project called Gryphon. “We are a new team, codenamed Gryphon. We are building a subscription platform, one that can be reused by other teams in the future. […]
Ever imagined something as “silly” as a Facebook comment making you miss out on an important job opportunity? Well, for all you know that could be what’s happening right now as you blame nepotism, witchcraft or your family’s bad luck. Judging from some posts I have seen on social media it is clear that many […]
Twitter over the years has been expanded the number of ways you can tweet. They have added images, videos, GIFs and doubled the amount of characters from 140 to 280. Sometimes the written word can’t quite communicate exactly what you want to say. We all have our individual vocal nuances and sometimes punctuation isn’t enough, […]
Sharing articles on twitter is, for some, now coming with a new option in addition to retweet and retweet with a comment. Twitter Support tweeted on Wednesday: Twitter are supposedly only going to verify if a user has opened the link on Twitter and nowhere else. I have tried to see if this is working […]
So yesterday, I woke up to an unpleasant surprise. Stories/Statuses on Twitter! The first thing I asked myself when I saw this, is who exactly asked for this and it seems I’m not the only one; Now those are just 3 users and you would assume that some users do actually want the feature which […]
Twitter verification is one of those tiny things people usually like to set them apart from “commoners”. Soon you might be able to actually request verification and boost your social standing (it’s kind of funny that the world works this way, but hey I don’t make the rules). Jokes aside though, Twitter is working on […]
I think it’s fair to say crowdfunding in Zimbabwe is pretty difficult if not actually dead. The first problem you encounter when trying to run a crowdfunding campaign be it for business or for donations is that most Zimbos don’t have access to the existing platforms for crowdfunding. Most don’t have foreign currency to donate […]
All my colleagues disagree with me. You my reader will probably disagree with me. That’s OK, my hope is that we can debate this. I saw the excitement on Twitter several days after the kid had trended. If you’re like me and had not seen this before, let me take you through what happened: Enter […]

A lot of the huge tech companies have seen a bump in usage and consumption induced by the Novel Coronavirus and our staying at home as a result. For Twitter – the surge is usage has resulted in 32 million extra daily users compared to the start of 2019. The 166 million current daily users […]
We Are Social’s Digital Report on Zimbabwe is pretty telling of just how impactful the floundering Zim economy on Zimbos usage Even before statistics started coming in from the likes of POTRAZ – data usage is on the decline, I think the assumption for most was that we’re using the internet less because of two […]
The greatest benefit of social media is arguably its ability to democratize information. Whilst that comes with pitfalls such as misinformation one can argue that sometimes the misinformation is unavoidable and doesn’t taint the overall purpose of social media. With the Corona Outbreak spreading rapidly and its impact on the global economy and health system […]
