RTGS Is Back, But The RBZ Website Remains “Under Maintenance”

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, RBZ, deposit incentives, banks cash

Remember how Zimbabwe’s central money transfer system, RTGS, was down? Well, good news. It’s back up and running.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe issued a public notice, confirming that the “technical challenges” have been resolved and “banking services restored.”

So, if you’ve been stuck trying to move money between banks, you should be good to go now. The wheels of commerce can finally turn a bit smoother now. Even though I know that many of you were not affected in the least, seeing as you are firmly in the informal and cash-based economy.

However, in typical Zimbabwean fashion, it wouldn’t be a full resolution without some fly in the ointment.

While the money’s moving, don’t bother heading over to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s official website for any official word or to check those all-important exchange rates. As of Wednesday afternoon, the RBZ site is still firmly “under maintenance.”

So, that means we still don’t know what exactly caused the technical challenges. We likely never will know.
