Actually, our 3G modem price is lower, says Econet

Econet Dongle

Econet DongleYesterday, we posted that Telecel’s $30 3G modem was the latest and greatest modem deal out there. Not quite true, commented an Econet staffer seconds after we hit the publish button!

Econet’s price for their dongle is now $28.00 with the same data for free.

Apparently Econet reduced the price last week and who knows, the Telecel move might actually be a reaction to that. On why they didn’t announce the good tidings, a representative from Econet says they’re going to eventually once they are ready with the a bigger picture mobile broadband service announcement. In a week we’re told.

So there you have it; If the Telecel dongle price was the best deal in town, here’s better than best, by just $2 of-course. Data is still better

Competition in any market is good. Usually in a competitive market, its the customers that benefit.

what we have here is an Oligopoly so the customer doesnt quite benefit coz it seems they have a price fix in place – no one is yet able to disrupt the current rip off trend prevailing in broadband pricing. Still with 8mil subscribers Econet should be able to give better deals due to economies of scale

the price of the modem and the free data you get with it is not a major concern for the majority of broadband users,…whether the modem goes down to $5, it still wont be a big deal considering that u will have to pay $98/Gigabyte thereafter.

Healthy competition for you there!! but where the heck is Net*One???

Ok Telecel is still ckeap. Just got an sms from Econet their modem is $28 and come with 25MB per month for 6 month making it 150MB you get in total.
With Telecel you pay an exta $2 making it $30 and you get your 300MB once. 15OMB worth $15 extra compared to econet. Plus after you finish those bundles you will still remain with cheaper bundle and faster internet from Telecel that is. So I’m summary Telecel still offers the best deal than Econet. Thanks to Telecel, compation is helping bring down the prices.

“… once they are ready with the a bigger
picture mobile broadband service announcement. In a week we’re told.”

Dear Econet, before you get us all excited we ask that whatever this announcement is, should it materialize, it had better be an announcement that actually shows you care about your customers access to the world wide web at prices that will allow people to actually re-discover the internet without the hassle of always checking on their balance. Surfing without this shadow of “how many megabytes left” is actually an enjoyable experience!

Let’s face the fact, your conning us with your data tarrifs. So a price reduction is in fact in order…but that won’t be enough. Telecel won me over last month and I’m never coming back…well unless that is this announcement has at least one “unimited” (10gig cap?) package that the average person can afford.

But for the mean time you can keep your $28 network locked modems and you can keep charging us demonically for data unless something revolutionary is really in the works.

Telecel has better speeds….and their bundles are cheaper than econet. Why not buy a telecel line and an econet modem if the $2 difference is worth that much to you

Econet is nothing but the biggest rip-off ever. Their modem may be cheap but their 3G internet chews up data faster than any provider I know. I have been to neighbouring countries using the same devices and applications but befuddled at the rate econet’s eats up data. Daylight robbery folks but we are powerless to bring in real competition into the country.

Telecel is still cheaper. 300MB of free data – Econet gives only 150MB over six months. So Telecel costs $30 and you get $30 worth of data. Econet costs $28 but you only get $15 worth of data (using the non discounted data price of $1=10MB). That means you are still paying $13 for the dongle while the Telecel dongle is effectively “free” and thats how it should be (and also how they should market it IMO). Coz Econet, you’re in the bandwidth selling business, NOT the dongle selling business! Oh I forgot, Econet is in EVERY BUSINESS!!!

econet is stingy.look at their promotions,if there a any.people use it because of its wide coverage.just buy powertel only and surf 24/7.

I cringe each time Econet has promos…

It seems to me that because Econet is aggressively trying to enter multiple markets with different products, they’ve lost their way regarding their core service: being a cell provider. If they changed their corporate structure and made Econet Wireless (or whatever the cell service is actually called) into an autonomous subsidiary, maybe people would get better pricing. Then the parent business can have fun doing lord-knows-what and people would get reasonable rates.

it leaves me to wonder how you 2 operators wanna make noise on a $2 difference to try and pronounce who is best.

you need to look more on your data prices and we will tell you who is best

  14. 4G dongles now available at Econet shops. Good move to get one? – Techzim

[…] really no point. At $90 you are paying extra for something you will never use. The 3G dongle is still only $28. Remember back in 2009 when it too was up there priced out of reach? And it’s not […]
