Say goodbye to low-end Huawei smartphones as they won’t be manufactured anymore

Huawei recently announced that they will soon not be manufacturing low-end smartphones anymore. This is because the category of smartphones is not making them that much money and the company would also like focus more premium devices. The company is now the 3rd largest smartphone manufacturer in the world and the largest in China.

The insights come from an announcement made by Mr. Yu Chengdong (Richard Yu) who is the CEO of the Consumer group Huawei that makes smartphones. Here’s what he said:

We are giving up the very low-end devices because the margin in this is extremely low, and it’s not making enough profit for us. The priority is Europe, China, and Japan, where the economy is healthy and people are able to consume them.

Over the past couple of years, Huawei has made its way into Zimbabwe. The initial offerings were the low-end smartphone like the Huawei Y220 then they started to bring their high-end devices locally. Almost anywhere you are in town, you’re bound to come across a shop selling low-medium range Huawei smartphones.

With high-end smartphones being expensive and sometimes not being worth the price for what people end up using, Huawei phones have become the got for entry devices. Now the company is trying to follow the steps of other smartphone manufacturers like HTC or LG that no longer manufacture low-end devices. This will probably leave most us who just want a device that does enough at a low cost with limited options to choose from.

Very few smartphone companies have been able to ditch low-end offerings and make it big like Apple by just offering medium-high end devices. What’s interesting to see if other companies like Techno or Astro which offer devices locally will take this opportunity to dominate the market. The opportunity might not be available now as there are still quite a number of low-end devices that Huawei has already manufactured is still selling but when that stock runs out, their chance will be open.

Let us know if you’d buy any other device from other manufacturers like Techno as an entry device for yourself or someone. Or are you a Huawei fan that you’d rather get a few more dollars to get a medium range device once the low-end smartphones are extinct.
