You May Want To Sign Your Kids Up For This Great Robotics And Coding Program

In March, we talked about the couple that is teaching kids about robotics and coding here in Harare and after that visit we were very impressed by what we saw. If you read about that and felt like this is something you would like your kids to sign up for then you are in luck, as the Maker Club has released their program for the coming term.

Tuesdays

Master Maker Robotics (@ Mt Pleasant)

Time: 3-5PM

Ages: 9-13 years

Starts 15 May

10 Sessions during the term

Cost: $200

Info: Combine the skill of coding with making and craft robotic creations you can animate using a computer program. Learn a variety of critical 21st century skills during these exciting sessions.

Wednesday

Coding Club (@ Hellenic Sports Club)

Time: 2-3PM

Ages: 6-8 years & 9-12 years

Starts 23 May

8 Sessions during the term

Cost: $90 for 6-8 yr

$120 for 9-12 yr

Info: Learn to code with SCRATCH. Created by MIT as a platform to teach young people the critical 21st century skill of coding.

Friday

Master Maker Innovation with Wood/ Hydraulics (@Hellenic Sports Club)

Time: 2:30-4PM

Ages: 5-8 years & 9 -12 years

Starts 25 May

9 Sessions during the tern

Cost: $140 for 5-8 yr olds

$180 for 9-12 yr olds

Info: This is the first in the cycle of Master Maker programs. Young people will learn to become creative with wood, use basic wood working tools and learn how to add hydraulics to make ther wooden creations move.

Saturday

Info: An introductory course into coding with Python. This is the perfect programming language to introduce teens to the creation of apps and games and is the future of AI

 

Time: 11-12PM

Scratch Coding

Ages: 9-12 year olds

Cost: $120

So this is what the program looks like and judging from the lack of a Monday activity, it seems The Maker Club hates Mondays just as much as everyone else does.

While I appreciate the costs involved… It’s a bit steep considering… There’s plenty of introductory courses online and unlimited telone is 90$… Obviously I’ll have to invest a bit of time with my kid… Problem that I have is what is the course outline… What are the kid to teacher ratio… Future prospects to future… So I can assess value… Most educators are here for the quick buck

  2. @Flawed you might actually have a powerful point.The internet is awash with a lot of information that you can access easily.Being someone who studied economics i found the going tough that i found myself somewhere in the electronic field.With a bit of interest i hve managed to teach myself using the internet.Its a cheaper option.Take for example python coding ……if you can buy a Raspberry ,a power supply,SD card and a few things like Breadboard ,LEDS,resistors which are next to nothing it can come to less than the USD 140.But again each business has its own model of operating.There will certainly be people interested and its actually a good initiative.All the best to them…
