Speaking at the announcement of Grok 4 , a new version of the it’s large language model, Elon Musk said he expects Grok to start discovering new technologies that currently not known to humanity.
Said Musk:
“I think it may discover new technologies as soon as later this year, and I would be shocked if it has not done so next year. I would expect Grok to, yeah, literally discover new technologies that are actually useful no later than next year, and maybe end of this year, and it might discover new physics next year, and within two years, I’d say, almost certainly. So, like, just let that sink in.”
The comment is remarkable as so far, larger language models really just produce wha they have learnt from their training data. They predict what to send to the user from the data they have gather from their training. These models have therefore so far not produced anything not already known to humanity.
According to reports the new Grok 4 was trained on xAI’s Colossus supercomputer, with multimodal features, faster reasoning, Grok 4 Voice, Grok 4 Code, a new interface, and other improvements.
The new release came following backlash at xAI over racist remarks by Grok, a situation not new to the company.
