Google’s video sharing service, YouTube, blocked in Turkey

youtube-logoTurkey has taken the move to block Google’s video sharing service, YouTube. The reason: that YouTube hosted a leaked video that was politically sensitive. The move comes after the country last week blocked Twitter, and then Google DNS. The country is heading towards election in the coming days.

This first thing that comes to mind with such reports is how YouTube is to blame for a video that’s been leaked on it. We doubt YouTube is the only platform that has the video. In fact, blocking YouTube will likely achieve the opposite, triggering curiosity and therefore demand for the video. Are they going to ban other services that allow video sharing too; Facebook, WhatsApp, WeChat, Telegram, Vimeo.. the list is endless. Hell, even Bluetooth is a video sharing service!

YouTube banning is not a foreign political tool to Turkey. In 2008, YouTube was banned after complaints against a video that insulted the founder and first president of country.  It was banned again briefly in 2010.
