Here’s why you should stop asking people to “like” your Facebook post

facebook-news-feedIf your Facebook strategy, involves telling people to “like”, “comment” or share posts, you probably want to re-strategise. Forget that this is a questionable means to get your posts into follower newsfeeds, now Facebook will punish you for it. In other words, stop it already!

Facebook has made an improvement to their algorithm to specifically make sure such newsfeed gaming becomes ineffective. Here’s an announcement made by Facebook on the update yesterday:

Like-baitingā€ is when a post explicitly asks News Feed readers to like, comment or share the post in order to get additional distribution beyond what the post would normally receive…

The improvement we are making today better detects these stories and helps ensure that they are not shown more prominently in News Feed than more relevant stories from friends and other Pages.

But it’s not just like-baiting that will be punished. The following too:

  • Resharing the same stuff over and over coz you realise people like it and will probably keep liking, commenting.
  • Posting links that mislead the visitor about the content on the other end.

If your engagement drops significantly in coming days and weeks, maybe as you point to a Facebook commercial conspiracy, realise the man in the mirror also needs to make some strategy changes.

    1. Extermination is a bit overboard. Deletion is enough. ;p
Or maybe not even deletion, but rather freezing the account so that they are tormented by seeing their account without being able to do anything with it, bwa ha ha ha har!

  1. So what.. are they going to remove the like button or are they just going to hide the story that keeps asking people to like it? Help me understand here.
And like what Farai Sairai asked, what is the punishment??
